Where Avatar's Floating Mountains Come to Life

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hunan Province, China

CITY OVERVIEW

──────────────────────────────────────────────────

The Real-World Pandora

Zhangjiajie is a prefecture-level city in Hunan Province, China, renowned for its extraordinary quartz sandstone pillar formations that inspired James Cameron's iconic floating mountains in the 2009 blockbuster "Avatar." This otherworldly landscape features over 3,000 dramatic sandstone pillars rising from lush forests, creating scenes that seem lifted from a dream or another planet.

The Wulingyuan Scenic Area, encompassing Zhangjiajie's core attractions, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 14, 1992. UNESCO recognized it as having "exceptional natural beauty" with quartz sandstone peak-forest landforms found nowhere else on Earth. In 2010, the geological formations were officially named the "Zhangjiajie landform" - one of the few landform types in the world named after a specific region.
